Take me out to the ballgame

On Wednesday, June 5th Proctor Elementary got to go see the North Shore Navigators collegiate baseball team play in Lynn, Massachusetts.  Team Gibbas was happy to be able to see the Proctor School band play a few songs before the game and then start the game with the national anthem.

A fun time was had by all as we watched the game, saw dog tricks, and tried to catch frisbees and soft baseballs being thrown into the stands.

And then it was time to head back to school....

Endangered Animals

Change is Simple

Today Team Gibbas students learned about endangered animals and what students can do to help them.  First students were given picture cards of endangered animals.  Students were asked to make a connection with the endangered animal and make a statement, "I am like the lizard because I like to climb on things."  Then students switched cards with three other students.

Next, students worked with a partner to write about their animal.  Students included the name of their animal, where their animal lives, and two adjectives to describe their habitat.  Finally, students made a guess as to why they thought their animal might be endangered.  Reasons that animals are endangered included habitat loss, pollution, over-hunting, and disease.

Later students played the Shrinking Resources game. This game is similar to musical chairs but instead of competing for chairs students competed for land or water resources.  As the game progressed it became more and more difficult to find the land and water resources that are necessary to live because oil spills, pollution, and building projects kept taking away land and water.

Thank you TESPTO and Change is Simple for another great learning experience!

Time For A Mystery Skype, Eh?

Our Second Mystery Skype
By:  Student Blogger Emma

On Thursday, May 24th, our class had our second Mystery Skype! When we tried to connect with the other class somewhere in the world, there was a BIG delay. Because of this we guessed that the other class might be somewhere pretty far away. While we were waiting, we decided to practice. When we finally connected after our delay, we couldn't hear the class! So we had to be very patient. Then after, we decided to just try and communicate in a different way. So to greet them, we all waved.
We decided to get white boards so our questioner and answerer could communicate since we couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear us.

After all that, we finally started. While we were asking questions, we had a note-taker who took notes on all the answers we had a Think Tank which generated the questions.

Our first question was if they were in the United States. Surprisingly,
they weren't! They were in Canada! The teacher also wrote that her class
loves math. So we said that we do too.
After a while we were getting really close. We knew that they were in a
province, not a territory, and they were near Nova Scotia. Then, Mrs.
Klipfel finally got us to be able to hear them! We were really happy.

They were getting really close too!
Then, we finally guessed their province! They were in New Brunswick.
Right after that they guessed that we were in Massachusetts.

When we were done, they told us some facts about New Brunswick,
since our class is studying Canada. Some of the facts were funny, like
they said that they have Target, they don’t have Wendy’s, and they asked
us if we like Shrek, which we said yes to.
They also told us facts that weren’t funny, like how they mostly speak French, their class is a combination of grades four and five, and that the population in New Brunswick is about 5,000. But eventually we had to stop, but we ended on a good note.
