PJ/Technology/Camp-In

What would you want to do if you were in fourth grade and you'd earned a special class reward?  You'd have a PJ/Camp-In/Technology Day, of course!  Team Gibbas students have been working hard all year to be quiet in the halls, and be responsible and respectful students.  Their hard work paid off and students completed their first Class Compliment chart during the last week of November.  Students voted, and they decided to celebrate with a PJ/Technology/Camp-In day on Friday, December 6th.

Thanks for being such a great group of students!  Keep up the amazing work!

Celebrating Mickey Mouse's 91st Birthday

Disney Day
By: Student Blogger Evan

Do you know what Disney Day is? Well at Proctor School Disney Day is Mickey Mouse’s birthday!
Yesterday Mrs.Gibbas’s class celebrated by going on a QR code hunt to find out were Minnie was taking Mickey for his 91st birthday. We went around the library scanning all the QR codes to find out the answers to where they were going. There were 18 codes and 1 separate code had the answers of it. Mickey and Minnie were going to different states and capitals plus famous landmarks like The Empire State Building or The White House. We were all zipping around left and right trying to find the codes we needed to finish the hunt. At 12:45 p.m. we had lunch and when we had to stop the room was filled with groans and moans because no one wanted to leave. We were having so much fun doing the QR hunt.

Thank you Mrs. Klipfel for creating this fun activity for us!

A visitor from Finland!

On Monday, October 28th Team Gibbas had a very special visitor, Eva Vahera the teacher from our partner classroom in Finland came to visit!  Eva showed us videos of her school in Finland and pictures of her students throughout the day.  Team Gibbas students were a bit jealous to learn that students in Finland don't wear shoes!  We thought it might be fun to try to be like Finland and just wear socks!
Eva taught us some Finnish words.  But most students agreed, their favorite part of Eva's visit was the Finnish candy that she brought for us to try!
Thanks for visiting Eva!
We learned a lot about Finland!

The Power of Yet

Poetry Power
By Student Bloggers: Ayden, Emmitt, Natalia, Maddy, Myles

Have you ever heard of the Power of Yet? In this classroom we got tagged in this game called Poetry Tag. And it is a game going around our school. We memorized a poem called The Power of Yet. This is us making tee-shirts for the game.

We decided to tag Mrs. Obuchowski’s class after  voting. Mrs. Gibbas found out that we could tag two classes so we decided to tag team Highmax. We were all so happy to try on our awesome  new tee-shirts. They looked amazing! We tagged the two classes by looking at their schedule and found the perfect time to strike.

The Power of Yet is something we are trying to remember in our classroom. Just because you cannot do something yet does not mean you can’t ever do it.

Vivid Volcanoes

Vivid Volcanoes

Do you think you can make a volcano erupt by mashing a button? Last week on Thursday, September 26th we made volcanoes erupt. This is how it started. We colored volcano pictures the day before, then Mrs. Klipfel came with the iPad cart. The room was loud and full of excitement as we pressed the icon of the app Quiver. “Mine's still not working!”́ "Mine too!” everyone exclaimed. Then once it finally worked we held the ipad over the picture and a there a three dimensional volcano popped up on the screen. Everyone was in shock how a colored picture could come to life on a screen. We decided to do this activity because we were studying earth's moving features.Everyone was walking around to see other people’s volcanoes erupt. We thought it was so cool that we could take the quiz about volcanoes. “When saying wow that's so cool”. We thanked Mrs. Klipfell for the amazing learning experience and making volcanoes come to life. Then she was on her way. And that was the end of our volcanic experience.

Rumbling Into Amazing Earthquakes

Rumbling Into Amazing Earthquakes
By Student Bloggers: Jac, Nathan, Ruby, Adelyn, and Ava

Soil bounced out of the pan and fell on the table as Ruby tapped the pan violently with a wooden block. The reason why we were doing this project is because we were trying to see how an earthquake can affect earth's landforms and  surface. The supplies that we used were a tin foil pan. Then we put foam in the pan. After that we put soil on top of the foam. Finally, we put it on a surface where there would be a crack in between. Then Ruby started tapping the pan. Then suddenly something emerged! Was it a foam block? The block of foam was supposed to represent the tectonic plates. Then we all had a discussion about what happened to the model. In the discussion we were saying that the earthquakes can make new landforms like mountains, valleys, canyons, plateaus and hills. This was a fun learning activity that we wish we could do again.

Comic Collection

The Team Gibbas Comic Collection

Did you know that it is possible to make comics the size of a credit card!? Well, you can! We got this idea by reading a book called Lunch Money. The main character in the story, Greg, made little comics and we thought it would be cool to make our own!  They turned out to be great. We were so proud of our little comics. First we came up with our rough drafts, then we wrote our master copies and then we illustrated them. Once we did that we cut them out we glued them onto a piece of paper, folded them, then stapled them, and finally cut them.  We have them hanging in the hallway outside of our classroom in little pouches. We all had an amazing time creating comics and sharing them with our classmates.

Oh Canada!

On Tuesday, June 11th Team Gibbas students transformed our classroom into a Canadian museum.  Students taught visitors about the Northern Lights, Canadian Sports, Canadian People, The Inuit, The Arctic, The First Nations, French Canada, and The Animals of Canada.  Each exhibit that students created was interactive so visitors could make puzzles, watch a puppet show, dine at a French bakery, participate in a sports game show, make beaded First Nations bracelets, watch the Northern Lights, play a Canadian Kahoot, and build an inukshuk.

Where in the world is your classroom?

Mystery Skype
By Student Blogger Dylan

On June 3, 2019 Team Gibbas students walked into the library for their first ever Mystery Skype. Each of these students had a special job to help the skype run smoothly. The jobs were the Greeter, the Questioner, the Answerer, Runners, Google Mappers, State/Country Experts, the Think Tank, the Supervisor, the Photographer, and the Blog Post Person. When the skype first started the Mystery Class told us they were in fifth grade.  After going back and forth we figured out they lived Canada and they bordered the US. They figured out we lived in Massachusetts. The Think Tank kept sending up questions about what province they were in. Finally we guessed New Brunswick. The classroom we were Skyping lived in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada! Their class is a French Immersion class which means 80% of their class is taught in French. 5,000 people live in their town. The other class told us that near their town is the largest covered bridge in the world! A fact about their school is they do not have to make up any snow days no matter how many snow days they have. In their school there are  students from 32 different countries. Their town is known for Old Home week which is like a carnival.

Thank you Mrs. Klipfel for helping us to make this fun learning connection!

Lowell's Immigration Stories

On March 21st, Team Gibbas fourth graders visited the Tsongas Industrial History Center in Lowell, Massachusetts as part of our fourth grade study of immigration.  While there students were able to tour the weaving room and saw some of the looms in operation.

To understand a bit about what it was like for immigrants coming to the United States from a different country, students were given a passport which told the story of a real person that immigrated to Lowell.

Then students pretended to be that immigrant meeting an immigration officer.  Students had to say hello in their native language, and state their name and their country of origin.

Students then got together with other "immigrants" from their home country and looked at real artifacts of items that people brought from their home country when relocating to America.

Later students were able to experience what it was like to be part of a town meeting in the late 1800's when the town of Lowell was trying to decide whether or not citizens should pay to have a school built for Irish immigrants.  Students took on different roles in the town meeting, some acting as citizens, and others as town officers.  Citizens dressed in period costumes and stated their opinion about whether or not the tax payers should pay for the school based on the information on their role card.  Many girls were shocked to find out that their opinions and votes didn't count because women didn't have the right to vote!

Students learned a lot and had fun on this field trip!
